Lucy R. Carsone

Carsone, Lucy Rose, 96. November 17, 1920 -March 11, 2017. Born in Hubbard, Ohio to Frank Paul and Pauline (Julian) Carsone. Died at Advocate South Suburban Hospital, Hazel Crest IL (pneumonia). Preceded in death by her parents and siblings Charles Paul (Beatrice) and Madelyn Pauline Carsone. She is survived by niece Ellen Carsone Davis (Richard), great-niece Dr. Elizabeth Davis-Berg (Joshua Berg) and their children Sophie and Charles Berg, all of Homewood IL. Lucy was a life-long member of St. Patrick’s Church (Hubbard OH). She grew up in Hubbard Ohio, attended St. Patrick’s school and Hubbard High School. She and her sister Madelyn cared for her parents in their family home after her father lost his sight. During World War II, Lucy worked nights at Powell Pressed Steel, making steel cylinders that she thought were used as bomb casings. Her sister worked days so that they could care for their parents. Her brother was in the Army during the war; they did not know until the war was over that he was stationed in Newfoundland. When the war ended, all the women were laid off. Lucy got a job in the Fine China Department of Woolworth’s in Youngstown. When the store closed for remodeling around 1950 she did not want to transfer to Cleveland and applied for a job at Sherwin Williams in Hubbard. Lucy worked there until her retirement in 1982. The plant made paint cans and lids; Lucy made the “ears” or handles for the cans. It was a very noisy environment which probably was the cause of her hearing problems later in life. After her parents were gone, the two sisters lived together in the family home, as neither of them married. They were very close and took trips each year together on their vacations. Family was very important to Lucy and her sister, and they stayed close to their brother’s family and his daughter’s family over the years. When Madelyn became ill, Lucy became her caregiver, helping her remain at home during her final years. After her sister passed, Lucy remained in her home in Hubbard until mid-2009 when we nearly lost her due to heart and breathing issues. She moved to Gates Mills OH with her niece Ellen and nephew Dick to recuperate after the hospital stays. Since 2009 she has required oxygen on a continuous basis. In the fall 2009, she agreed to join the Davis household on a permanent basis. Lucy was a gentle and easy-going person, a joy to be around. In 2012, the Davis’ decided to move to Illinois to be closer to their daughter’s family and granddaughter. Lucy moved with them to Homewood IL. She loved being a part of the extended family, including the two grandchildren. During renovations of the Berg home, their entire family stayed with the Davis’ and Lucy loved watching her great-great-niece Sophie grow up. Since the birth of her great-great-nephew, she has loved spending time with her “little Charlie” too. Every morning at breakfast, Lucy would sing to each of us a good morning song. She would also share stories about her life and family, enriching our lives. She will be greatly missed by all. Calling hours are Friday, March 17 from 6-8 PM at Tews-Ryan Funeral Home, Homewood. Funeral services will be held on Monday March 20, 2017 at 11:00 AM at the Kelley-Robb-Cummins Funeral Home. Family and friends may call on Monday March 20, 2017, one hour prior to the funeral services from 10-11 AM at the Kelley-Robb-Cummins Funeral Home in Hubbard. Interment will be at Hubbard Union Cemetery.
